Schloss Gobelsburg
Austria / Kamptal / Gobelsburg
Today this winery belongs to the Zwettl in the Waldviertel Cistercian monastery. They acquired the castle as early as 1740. In 1171, the monastery owned extensive lands in Kammern and Gobelsburg and, of course, vineyards in the best locations. From 1958, the future abbot of Zwettl, Father Bertrand Baumann, ran the winery with a sure hand. He made the "Gobelsburger Messwein" a well-known brand. Matured wines surviving from his time prove how impressive his skills were.
The castle and the winery have been run by Michael Moosbrugger since February 1996. He was previously at the famous Hotel Gasthof Post in Lech am Arlberg. The winery quickly returned to the top. Excellent vineyards have been managed according to organically integrated principles for many years. Riesling grows on the famous Zöbinger Heiligenstein and on the Kammerner Gaisberg, and the best vineyards for Grüner Veltliner are called Lamm, Grub and Kammerner Renner. No other types of white wine are produced here. 25 percent of the area under cultivation is dedicated to red wine, including Pinot Noir as a tribute to the Cistercians from Burgundy. Michael Moosbrugger strives to produce wine that is as authentic as possible; depending on the style and potential of the grapes, fermentation takes place either in stainless steel or oak. The latest innovative development in the basement is called the Dynamic Cellar Concept. So that the wines no longer have to be pumped, they are transported on wheels in a completely flexible cellar concept. A special barrel on wheels was developed for this purpose. The wines are matured in small and large oak barrels made exclusively of wood from nearby Manhartsberg. With his Traditions line, Moosbrugger follows the vinification process as it used to be and gives his wines the time they need to develop.
Falstaff magazine voted Michael Moosbrugger "Winegrower of the Year" 2006 for his outstanding achievements over the past ten years.
