The history of Rioja is almost inextricably linked to that of Bordeaux. When the phylloxera catastrophe hit the Bordeaux region of France, the people there dranks large quantities of wine from the Rioja region instead. This also led to the introduction of barriques there.

A really good Rioja should be elegant and delicately spicy, not too woody, and the distinctive taste of the Tempranillo grape must remain clearly recognisable.

Marques de Tomares Reserva 2017 exhibits all of these attributes. A wonderfully fruity nose, a delicate vanilla touch, light roasted aromas and notes of leather and tobacco. On the palate, it is light and elegant, with intense fruit and impressive pressure. Red berries and juicy on the finish with a wonderful spiciness.

The 2017 vintage is even more flavourful than the already magnificent 2016 vintage and has more tannins. Overall, it makes an excellent impression and will continue to age well.
