Weingut Kracher
Austria / Neusiedlersee / Illmitz
Alois Kracher was one of the great visionaries of viticulture, spearheading the Austrian wine miracle of the 1990s and driving the global renaissance of sweet wines. In 2007, the entire wine world mourned the loss of Luis, as he was affectionately known, after his untimely death.
Anyone who takes on such an inheritance must inevitably combine many opposing characteristics. Luis' son Gerhard Kracher has been running the winery, which his grandfather established and which made his father world-famous, since 2007.
Gerhard began to take over responsibility as early as 2021, representing the winery at international events and gaining experience around the globe. Gerhard Kracher remains closely connected to the Seewinkel - but, at the same time, is a cosmopolitan globetrotter who loves Californian cuisine and the southern French way of life. He knows what he owes to tradition and yet looks ahead, always seeking new ideas and open to upcoming trends and innovations.
The range of what is one of the best-known Austrian wineries includes Beerenauslese, Auslese, Eiswein and small quantities of dry white and red wine in addition to the world-famous Trockenbeerenauslese.
From Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Traminer, Scheurebe, Muskat-Ottonel and now and then Zweigelt, Alois Kracher created 10 to 15 different Trockenbeerenauslese in two different styles.
The wines that are aged in large wooden barrels or stainless steel tanks and show the classic style of the region are called Zwischen den Seen (between the lakes). The wines of the Nouvelle Vague line are vinified in new barrique barrels. They are characterised by depth, flavour and sustainability.
The winery was named "Sweet Winemaker of the Year" at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1994, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2008 and 2009. To date, there have only been 3 wines from Austria which have been awarded 100 points by Falstaff. And that's right - all 3 wines come from this unique winery in Illmitz.
