Tenuta Villa Nova

Italy / Collio

Tenuta Villanova can look back on an impressive history as the oldest winery in the Collio. When we visited we were amazed by the lovingly maintained building which is beautifully situated in the landscape. Exuding typical Italian charm, it welcomes visitors near the foothills of the rolling hills of the Collio. The Tenuta is the oldest winery in the area, with a history dating back to 1499. Unique to this winery, both wine and grappa can be produced in the Tenuta winery. That is unique in Italy because the law stipulates separate production locations for the two products but the winery's license dates back to a time when this regulation did not exist.

The winery has been owned by the Benatti family since the 1930s, and the vineyards extend over the Isonzo area and the Collio. Around 200 hectares of land, including around 130 hectares of vineyards, belong to the winery. The wine range extends from the typical autochthonous grape varieties Friulano and Ribolla Gialla to Pinot Grigio, the iconic Sauvignon Blanc and red wine varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

They have also made a name for themselves as a distillery, as they can pick their own grapes and control the entire process themselves. A grappa from Tenuta Villanova is definitely worth trying.
