Château de Pommard Maranges Premier Cru "Le Clos des Loyéres" 2019 Rouge, 0,75 L

The Maranges appellation is one of the younger ones in the region and was only founded in 1988. It includes the municipalities of Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Dezize-lès-Maranges, and Sampigny-lès-Maranges, and on it there are seven Premier Cru sites.

This Burgundy demonstrates perfectly that great wine doesn't have to be overpriced. What we had our glass here can easily compete with many much more expensive wines. The winery cultivates its soils organically and is in the process of converting to biodynamic farming, a rarity in Burgundy.

For Pinot Noir, the wine enters the glass quite dark. On the nose, it is a small fruit bomb with lots of elderberry, cherry and a delicate smoky note. Dense and dark fruit appear again on the palate, paired with sour cherries and beautifully integrated wood. It's quite fresh and elegant, and the tannins are very smooth, perfectly rounding off the wine. It's very full-bodied in the finish, but has an exciting ethereal, almost light-footed note.

A young but really excellent Pinot Noir that will stick in the memory for far more than just the amazing bottle.
