Château Troplong Mondot

France / Bordeaux / St. Emilion

Château Troplong Mondot is a famous Saint-Émilion winery. Its history is closely linked to that of Château Pavie; the then owner Alexandre Valette also acquired Pavie in 1943. In 1981, his great-granddaughter Christine Valette took over Troplong Mondot and, with the help of the well-known oenologist Michel Rolland, began to produce wines in the second highest class of Premier Grand Cru Classés.

Chateau Troplong Mondot cultivates 33 hectares of vineyards. Here, vines with an average age of around 30 years grow on a plateau with calcareous clay soils, enriched with flint and chalk. Around 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvinon and 5% Cabernet Franc are grown in the Troplong Mondot vineyards. Draft horses are used to plow the vineyards in order to reduce soil compaction. With extensive foliage work and the right thinning, the winemakers create the conditions for optimal grape ripeness.

Wines from Château Troplong Mondot usually have very fine fruit aromas, with a dense and complex taste, and shine with ripe tannins and powerful body. A bottle of Troplong Mondot usually needs a few years of maturation until the barrique notes are perfectly integrated into the wine and, like many other top Bordeaux wines, has a storage potential of up to 20 years. But who wants to wait that long?
