Champagne is the most famous wine region in the world. It has over 30,000 hectares of vineyards and around 300 million bottles of sparkling wine are produced here, depending on the year. Surprisingly to many, more than half of the champagne produced is drunk by the French themselves! Champagne is the northernmost wine-growing region in Europe, and the climate here is correspondingly cool. The grapes don't reach the ripeness of the more southerly regions, which is exactly why such great sparkling wines are produced. The climatic conditions are perfect for the acid structure of the wines. In addition, the unique terroir, which is strongly influenced by lime, distinguishes it from other regions.
