The Spritzer - Austria's Most Popular Long Drink

The Spritzer - Austria's Most Popular Long Drink

The warmer the temperature, the greater the desire Austrians have for a spritzer. Across the alpine country, they're a blessing on hot days and a source of identity at the same time - the Spritzer or G'spritzter. The most well-known face and patron of "Spritzwein" is the former Mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl. His famous saying "Man bringe den Spritzwein" (Bring us a spritzer) introduced his governing coalition and indirectly gave Spritzwein cult status.

Drinking a good spritzer is more en vogue than ever and is firmly established in the Viennese lifestyle scene. Despite all the facets, variations and flavours of spritzers, there's one thing that everyone agrees on: A pure and high-quality white wine must form the base. Incidentally, a mixing ratio of 1:1 makes the perfect spritzer.

Which varietals are ideal for spritzers?

Aromatic, rather young white wines are perfect. Use:

  • Welschriesling
  • Grüner Veltliner
  • Viennese Gemischter Satz

Depending on the region, soda water or mineral water is added to the wine. Choose according to your preference. From a traditional glass with a handle at a Heurige to a glass with a stem and revitalising garnishes such as lemon, lavender, syrups or superfoods, almost anything is possible.

Sommerspritzer is the light version of the classic spritzer, with less wine, and is enjoyed as a more refreshing drink. Kaiserspritzer, on the other hand, is the stylish version with elderflower syrup. Find suitable sparkling wines, which can be used for very high-class spritzers, in our white wines category. Don't be afraid to experiment - almost anything is allowed!

A brief list of the common spritzer variants

  • Weißer Spritzer
  • Roter Spritzer (with red wine)

However, you won't find a Schorle, as spritzers called in Germany, in Austria. Never.
